The historic Mishkenot Sha'ananim neighborhood is located just outside the Old City, across from the Tower of David. Sitting on the hill above the Sultan's Pool, it is only a few minutes' walk from the Orient Jerusalem, and well worth the visit.
Founded in 1860, the neighborhood, the first to be built outside the Old City's walls, was established when Sir Moses Montefiore constructed a flourmill there. This landmark flourmill, also known as Montefiore's Windmill, became synonymous with the area.
The flourmill operated for some 25 years before it became obsolete. It has since undergone various incarnations, and was reconstructed and renovated before it acquired its current role, serving as an exhibition venue for Montefiore's life and work.
This famous neighborhood is a captivating combination of Jerusalem houses, lush vegetation and winding staircases. Every vantage point in Mishkenot Sha'ananim offers sweeping views of the most beautiful scenery in the world, the walls of the Old City, and the Tower of David.
Every hour of the day has its own special magic, and guests are encouraged to wander through the neighborhood's alleyways, and revel in all its stunning sights and beauty.
